About the Junior Choir

The St Paul’s Junior Choir is open to boys and girls who are aged 8-14. It rehearses weekly during school terms and leads the service music at around 8-10 Sunday morning services per year and some other special occasions.

The Junior Choir offers a special opportunity for children to develop their innate musical skills and abilities. Choristers receive training in vocal technique, musicianship, sight reading, aural skills and ensemble skills. They are exposed to challenging, beautiful and uplifting choral music from the rich Anglican musical tradition, in a variety of musical styles from the renaissance, baroque and classical periods through to more modern repertoire.

The St Paul’s Junior Choir creates an opportunity for children to socialise and create firm friendships with like-minded people. Rehearsals are carried out in a spirit of fun and discovery; the enjoyment of music and of one another’s company is a major focus for the choir.

Child safety and wellbeing is an absolute priority in the Parish of Manuka and the Anglican Diocese of Canberra-Goulburn to which we belong. All personnel working and volunteering with children are required to hold a current Working With Vulnerable People card (ACT Govt) and to complete the Diocese of Canberra & Goulburn’s ‘Creating Safe Ministries’ programme. Further information about Diocesan policies and protocols can be found here

St Paul’s warmly invites all children to be part of its Junior Choir, regardless of religious denomination.

Junior Choir Director

Kate Edwards

Holding tertiary qualifications in Music, Languages and Education, Kate is an experienced teacher and has directed a number of children’s choirs in both school and church contexts, including the Junior Choir of St Luke’s, Mosman, and the Junior Choir of Holy Trinity, Orange. For ten years she was the founding director of a junior chamber choir for students of exceptional musical ability at Kinross Wolaroi School in Orange NSW, and she has worked on multiple occasions as a Regional Children’s Choir Director for Opera Australia.

Kate has over a decade’s experience in teaching Music, Latin and French at primary- and high-school levels. She encourages an interest in foreign languages by frequently selecting music set to foreign texts for her choirs to sing. She recognises the incredible capacity of children to rise to sophisticated musical and linguistic challenges, and believes in setting high standards.

Kate’s passion for choral music stems from her own experience as a young chorister in a traditional Anglican parish in Sydney, which she cites as an enormously positive and influential part of her musical and spiritual formation.

As a pianist, violinist and chorister, Kate believes strongly in fostering and encouraging all aspects of a child’s musical development. She loves to see the joy that children derive from choral singing and to witness the transformative effect that it can have on their musical and social confidence. She considers the incorporation of fun and laughter in rehearsals absolutely imperative.
